Honors:

Volunteer Award from Los Angeles Alzheimer's Association
San Fernando Valley Senior Community Service Award

With more than 25 years of experience in the field of Geriatrics, Marlene spent 12 years as the Director of the Center for Aging, Research and Evaluation at Granada Hills Community Hospital. In addition to the evaluation and treatment of chronic conditions of aging, the center offered education and support groups and formed the basis for “The Memory Club,” a very successful program that continues today.

Marlene participates on many of the ongoing committees that enhance the elder community and support the caregivers. Among these, with Marlene’s special brand of leadership firmly plastered on them, she served as co-chairperson for several consecutive years for the annual Caregiver Wellness Day, which is part of the Greater San Fernando Valley Office of the Alzheimer’s Association and has managed the exhibitor tables at the yearly Los Angeles Alzheimer’s Association “Memory Walk” since 1998. In June of ’06, she was honored for her outstanding community service by the Alzheimer’s Association at their annual volunteer luncheon.

For the past five years, Marlene has been a Senior Housing Consultant with Concepts for Living, LLC, a residential placement service for seniors. With her RN and a Certification in Geriatrics, she lends her clinical expertise, her mild manner and her ingratiating sense of humor to dealing with the seniors and their families who they serve, to making their journey easier because of her keen ear and helping hand.

With 20 years in senior care and since 1999, providing individualized counseling to seniors and their families regarding residential placement, Sue regales her extraordinary team at Concepts for Living as equally committed in civic matters and community involvement with the population that they serve as she is. However, she says, “never have I been prouder to be a part of a steering committee as I am to be on the Executive Board for M.A.P.S. Charities Inc., this nonprofit organization devoted to caring for the multitude of lower income seniors who have so few resources, so few places that can provide the care they need, the help they require and the respect they deserve”.

She explains that “We, on the Board, are only able to provide a ‘band-aid’ to their open wounds, but at least we can stop some of the pain and let them know that there are those willing to listen and who truly care.  As this organization matures and grows, hopefully, the funding that we need will do likewise….mature and grow….then and only then, will we be able to provide even more to so many waiting for our helping hand”.

In addition to her position as secretary on the M.A.P.S. Charities Board, in the vast senior professional circle, Sue is also involved with many other community organizations and committees, including Older Adult Task Force(OATF) of Santa Monica, Mid-Valley Aging Network (MVAN) and co-chairs West Side MAPS (Marketing and Admissions Professionals for Seniors), as well as the Networking Association for Geriatrics (NAG), which she founded. She is also on the Advisory Board for Circle of Care Leeza’s Place in Sherman Oaks, CA, one of the home-like support centers founded by Leeza Gibbons for families and caregivers caring for those with Alzheimer’s.

“With this website representing this most important foundation, M.A.P.S. Charities, I hope we can bring an awareness to the vast internet community out there, to help them remember and acknowledge this segment of our population so often forgotten. Remember that these people developed, grew, created so much of what we have today and we have them to thank. PLEASE …HELP US… HELP THEM!!”

2009: nominee,  LA Business Journal's Woman of the Year
2010: Recipient, M.A.P.S. Charities, Inc. Community Service Award

After over 20 years as a Certified Financial Planner specializing in assisting seniors with their investments and financial planning, Sharon decided it was time for a change. Having cared for aging family members, including her mother-in-law who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and spent her last years living with Sharon and her family, she quickly became aware and educated about the needs of seniors. So in 2002, Sharon and her partner Lynn Estrada, purchased a Comfort Keepers franchise that provides non-medical in-home care to seniors and assists them with the everyday activities that become difficult as we age. In addition, she also obtained the designation of Certified Senior Advisor.

To further her need to be of service, Sharon has served on the committee for the annual Caregiver Wellness Day, which is part of the Greater San Fernando Valley office of the Alzheimer's Association. She also participates in and sponsors numerous community fundraising events for The Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson's Resource Organization, One Generation Senior Center, Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California, and weSPARK Cancer Support Center. However, recently much of her dedication is spent as a board member of M.A.P.S. Charities, Inc., raising funds to assist seniors in need.
